My Garden Journal: week of February 5, 2024

This is week #2 of my gardening season, there was not much action but there was definitively progress and a few more seeds that were started

Seedling updates

Surprisingly the tomatoes sprouted in less than 1 week, Martino’s Roma was the first to show up, this is how they look like now:

Hubiscus Roselle

A very common “agua fresca” in Mexico is Agua de Jamaica, which is made with Flor de Jamaica, aka, Hibiscus Roselle, that’s something that I tried last year and unfortunately they were left unattended and after a stretch of 3 weeks without rain, I lost all but one plant that had a few flowers so it’s completely viable in the PNW zone 8b and I’m doubling up this year, so that went in this week, perhaps a couple of weeks than recommended but I think that’s preferable due to the short gardening season.

Red Hibiscus RoselleTomorrow SeedsVery viable in the PNW, I have high hopes for it. This is a one year old seed.

Broccoli Rabe

This is the first cruciferous vegetable that I will plant in my garden, I bought these seeds last year but never got the chance to plant it. I have heard a lot of horror stories about the cabbage worm and that has stopped me from planting cruciferous vegetables, the idea here is to plant them as early as possible, harvest them and then use the raised beds again with Corn that can go directly in the ground by mid May.

Broccoli Rabe (rapini)Tomorrow SeedsFirst time growing rapini, not sure how that will go in the PNW.

What else is happening in the garden?

Not much really, peppers are still a no-show but I recall they can take up to 2 weeks, I am wondering if I need to get some bare root strawberries or if the plant I have would be enough.

I learnt that Hellebores benefit from pruning this time of the year, so I need to find some time for that.

And that is all for this week
